County Down is located in the southeast of Northern Ireland, with Antrim and Armagh as its neighbours.
Down is immortalised by William Perch French in “The Mountains of Mourne”. Saint Patrick arrived in the area in A.D. 432 and later died in Downpatrick, where the saint is buried. County Down is also referred to as the Bronte County as Patrick Bronte, the father of Emily, Charlotte and Anne Bronte, was born in the Bann Valley.
The area has the Slieve Donard Mountain Range as well as the Mourne Mountains to add to the beauty of its landscape and the jewel in that crown must be Strangford Lough, much beloved of naturalists and boat enthusiasts alike. A more tranquil, though no less majestic landscape can be enjoyed in the grounds of Mount Stewart, home to one of Ireland’s best-known gardens.
In Newcastle the National Trust managed Murlough National Nature Reserve provides a beautiful backdrop for bird watching or walking. The county also boasts some fine forest parks such as Tollymore Forest Park in Newcastle and Castlewellan Forest Park in Castlewellan.
Newry is a busy shopping location in County Down and well worth a visit for a bit of retail therapy and a short hotel break.
