County Roscommon is located in the Ireland West Region, together with counties Galway and Mayo. Roscommon is located in the province of Connaught and is one of the least inhabited provinces in Ireland.

The famous Irish songwriter and painter, Percy French, was born in County Roscommon near Elfin in 1854 and one of his best-known songs is “the Mountains of Mourne”. The inaugural Percy French Summer School was held in Castlecoote House in 2009.
Athlone is one of the main towns in Roscommon and is located at a crossing of the River Shannon and near to Lough Ree. It was also a Norman base and the town boasts a fine example of a Norman Castle, which is open as a museum.
There are a number of attractions worth visiting in Roscommon, such as Strokestown Park House, built in the 18th century and in addition to a tour of the house and the recently restored gardens, you can visit the Famine Museum, which outline the background to the Great Irish Famine which took place in the 1840’s. King House is a fine example of a Georgian mansion and was home to the Earls of Kingston. Boyle Abbey is a fine example of a Cistercian Abbey.
Clonalis House – ancestral home of the O’Connors of Connaught, who were descendants of the last High Kings of Ireland and which includes such fine artefacts as the Cornonation Stone and the last harp of Turlough O’Carolan. Other attractions include Roscommon Castle, Derryglad Folk Museum and the Elphin Windmill – the last working windmill in Ireland.
