County Wicklow is located on the East Coast of Ireland in the East Coast and Midlands Region. It borders counties Dublin, Kildare, Carlow and Wexford and is also known as the Garden County.
Wicklow is only an hour from Dublin Airport and less than an hour from Dublin City Centre. When travelling around the county you will find a wide variety of Wicklow hotels or guesthouse accommodation to choose from.
The Wicklow landscape is majestic, whether you are exploring the Wicklow Mountains or the sandy beaches of Brittas Bay or the glens, lakes and woodlands that abound.
If you want to get a real feel for the wilderness in County Wicklow visit the Wicklow Mountains National Park, which covers 20,000 acres of Wicklow uplands, the National Parks and Wildlife Service manage the park. Perhaps the most well-known and popular location within the park is the Glendalough valley, which, in addition to its spectacular scenery, “the valley of the two lakes” is also, knows for its monastic site and Round Tower.
The monastic city was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and the largest church on the site dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and is know as St. Kevin’s Church or St. Kevin’s Kitchen. There are a number of walks, which allow you to explore the Glendalough valley and surrounding hills as well as the Glendalough Visitor Centre. The area was used as a film location in the John Boorman film Excalibur.
As the Garden of Ireland it is not surprising that there are a large number of wonderful gardens and country estates to visit in Wicklow. Each year the Wicklow Gardens Festival features over 30 gardens, both private and public. Some of the fine country estates in Wicklow include Powerscourt House and Gardens located only 20 minutes from Dublin is a fine example of an 18th century Palladian mansion. It has one of the finest gardens in Europe as well as shops and restaurants, a golf course and the 5 Star Ritz Carlton Hotel on the estate.
Nearby is Kilruddery House and Gardens, home to the Earls of Meath since 1618 and a fine example of an Elizabethan-revival mansion and has featured in the TV production, the Tudors and in the film Becoming Jane. Its gardens are mainly 17th century in their layout with some later 18th and 19th century additions. Also worth a visit is Avondale House and Forest Park, located near the village of Rathdrum and once home to Charles Stuart Parnell, a famous Irish political figure. The house is set in a magnificent forest park of over 500 acres.
Located in West Wicklow is Russborough House, the house was built in 1741 and designed by the famous architect Richard Cassells. Lord and Lady Beit bought the house in the 1950’s and he established the Alfred Beit Foundation in the 1970’s. The house has a number of fine art and collectables as well as the Beit collection of paintings.
The house is located not far from the beautiful Blessington Lake, which covers over 500 acres. Mount Usher Gardens, located in Ashford on the east of the county are a fine example of a Robinsonian garden and also has a shopping courtyard and Avoca Café.
Other attractions to visit in County Wicklow include, Wicklow Gaol, Arklow Maritime Museum, Avoca Handweavers, Avoca Mines, Baltinglass Abbey and the Powerscourt and Glenmalure waterfalls.
There are plenty of walks and scenic areas to explore in County Wicklow including Ireland’s longest self-guided trail, the Wicklow Way, the Glen of Imaal, the Wicklow Gap, the Great Sugar Loaf, Tomnafinnogue Woodlands Walk, Glenmalure Valley, Bray and Greystones Cliff Walks, Loughs Tay and Dan and Trooperstown.
