Galway is the unofficial cultural capital of Ireland and is poised to be European Capital of Culture in 2020. It is the ultimate getaway destination in the West. Galway is the country’s sixth largest city but has still managed to retain much of its small town character and is home to many artists, writers and artisans. 6,870 Irish speakers are located in in Galway with the Gaeltacht located on its doorstep.

Visit the city’s hub, the 18th century Eyre Square where you will discover a popular meeting spot surrounded by nearby hotels, shops and pubs that showcase Galway's traditional folk charm and music.

Nearby, you can wander its cobble-stoned streets and feel yourself stepping back in time to Medieval Ireland as you pass through the winding lanes of the Latin Quarter with its rustic charm and beautiful hotels.

Galway city is also the gateway to Connemara and the Wild Atlantic Way. The wild and unique region of Connemara offers spectacular scenery of valleys, mountains, lakes and unparalleled hillwalking across the peaks of the Twelve Bens. Perfect for an adventure or activity holiday, you will find lots of accommodation catered to this.

The coast line is wrought into rocky inlets sheltering white sandy beaches and beautiful fishing villages such as Roundstone and is studded with the beautiful islands such as the Aran islands and Inishbofin that make for interesting day trips. A considerable background for a relaxing spa or beach break for all the family, is why people keep returning to Galway. After all the West is Best!

The late Hollywood actor Peter O’Toole was born in Connemara in 1932, star of Laurence of Arabia and famous for being nominated for eight Oscars and never winning one. The Claddagh ring and the aran sweater are symbols of Galway. Galway also has an artisan, eclectic selection of restaurants to choose from all the city and county.

Things to Do

  • Galway City: Visit the city’s hub, the 18th century Eyre Square, a popular meeting spot surrounded by shops and traditional pubs that often offer live Irish folk music. Nearby, you can wander its cobble-stoned streets and feel yourself stepping back in time to Medieval Ireland as you pass through the winding lanes of the Latin Quarter, which retains portions of the ancient medieval city walls. Galway also hosts the annual Galway Races and Festivals such as the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival to name but a few.

  • Clifden: Known as the “Capital of Connemara”, a vibrant and cosmopolitan town on the very edge of Europe. Clifden is set in a very picturesque and unique setting between the foothills of the Twelve Bens and the Atlantic Ocean. Base yourself here for an unforgettable experience of Connemara and the Wild Atlantic Way.

  • Connemara National Park features 2,957 hectares of mountains, bogs, heaths, grasslands and forests. Visit the multi-lingual exhibition on the Connemara Landscape, bring a picnic and avail of the outdoor or indoor picnic areas. Follow the Nature Trails or take one of the designated walks up Diamond Hill for amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Admission is Free.

  • Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden: A whole day could be set aside to visit this, one of Ireland’s best loved and most iconic tourist attractions. The estate is set on 1,000 acres including a 6 acre Victorian Walled Garden with its delightfully restored garden buildings. There are woodlands and lakeshore walks to be discovered, hidden among them you can find the beautiful Gothic Church with its nearby Mausoleum.  Visit the Abbey itself and be educated through its history and spirituality. With great options for dining and shopping, Kylemore Abbey has all you need for the perfect Connemara day out.

  • Roundstone: This Connemara village is beautifully set on a most spectacular coastal drive overlooking the Atlantic at the foot of Errisbeg Mountain. Take in the remarkable beauty of the surrounding mountains and seascape as you watch the local fishermen preparing and returning with their day’s catch from its busy harbour. Travel on a couple of miles and you will come across the spectacular Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Beaches lying back to back forming a tombolo jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Killary Harbour is Ireland’s only true fjord with a depth of 45m at its centre.  Majestic views of the Twelve Bens, the Maumturk Mountains and Mweelrea, the highest mountain in Connacht can be seen in all directions. The Harbour and surrounding area offer ample opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast and there are regular boat trips around the fjord.

  • Mannin Bay and the Blueway: Mannin Bay is a launch point for a range of water-based activities. The Blueway is a network of water trails at which you can experience a variety of water based activities including kayaking and snorkelling. The bright white sand of the area allows you to see clearly the marine life passing beneath but be sure to look up and all around too or you will miss out on this unique land and seascape!

  • Quiet Man Bridge: If you find yourself travelling between Oughterard and Clifden do stop at this little bridge made famous by the 1950 film “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. It is visible from the road and clearly signposted.

  • Athenry Heritage Centre: Heritage abounds within the ancient walls of the award winning Athenry Heritage Centre, a unique experience of history that visitors both young and old can enjoy.

  • Islands: Dotted around the coastline of Galway are some wonderful islands to visit. Wait for the tide to go out and drive on to the mythical Omey Island or get away from it all and catch a ferry to Inishbofin or the Aran Islands.
