Things to Do

Killarney National Park: Killarney National Park is one the most popular destinations for visitors to the Kerry region.  Spanning out over 25,000 acres, the park is home to some of the most scenic views in Ireland. From Lady’s View along the Ring of Kerry to the Torc Mountain and Waterfall you will never be short of epic photo opportunities. The park itself contains mountains, lakes, islands and flatlands as well as the beautiful and historic Muckross House.

Muckross House, Gardens and Traditional Farms: This gorgeous 19th-century estate set among mountains and woodland, is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Lakes of Killarney. The Victorian mansion is fully furnished with many original and unique items, and allows the visitor to truly feel how the upstairs and downstairs worlds worked together. The Gardens are famous for its rock garden carved out of the surrounding limestone rock, and nearby the Traditional Farms highlight the past traditions and forgotten cultures of the era.

Ross Castle: This 15th-century tower house and keep on the edges of the idyllic Lough Leane is a beautiful example of the typical medieval Irish stronghold. Originally built by the O'Donoghue Mór chieftains, the Castle was the last fortress in Munster to withstand Cromwell’s conquest, not being captured until 1652. The castle today contains 16th and 17th century oak furniture, and boat trips and waterboats are available from the pier.

Skellig Michael: This barren outcrop jutting out of the Atlantic Ocean is one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in the Republic of Ireland.  The bigger of the two Skellig Islands sits 12 km off the Kerry coast and was once the home to an ancient Christian monastery dating to between the 6th and 8th centuries. Today the island is known worldwide as Ahch-To; the home of Luke Skywalker in the most recent trilogy of Star Wars movies. The island is also home to a wide range of birds including Puffins and Gannets and although the weather can hamper your journey to the island, it is certainly an experience not to be missed.

The Macgillycuddy's Reeks stretches out for almost 20kms and is also the seat of Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil (1,038m). The mountain range offers a selection of walks and contains almost 30 peaks in total. The various walks can be done piecemeal or all in one day, which takes between 10-12 hours. A full day hike is tough, but offers amazing views over the Reeks and Black Valley, and along the way you will walk in the footsteps of the ancient Fianna warriors of Celtic Ireland.

Ring of Kerry:  The Ring of Kerry is a 179 km route that snakes around the picturesque Iveragh Peninsula in southwest Kerry. The circular route allows you to start at any location, though visitors start off from the beautiful town of Killarney. Along the way you will see rustic seaside villages and dramatic coastal landscapes, and picture-perfect Mountain and lake views, such as at Ladies View. There is also an established walking path known as The Kerry Way, as well as a cycling path which uses older quieter roads where possible.

Derrynane House: Along the Ring of Kerry is the beautiful village of Derrynane, the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell, ‘The Liberator’. This giant of British and Irish politics lived in the beautiful Derrynane House situated on 120 hectares of parklands at the edge of the village. Today the House displays many relics of O'Connell’s time as Lord Mayor of Dublin and as the first Catholic Member of the British Parliament.

The Dingle Peninsula: No visit to Kerry would be complete with a scenic trip around the Dingle Peninsula. This rugged coastal drive consists of craggy mountains, steep sea-cliffs, sandy beaches, and isolated islands. The town of Dingle is like something out of a postcard, and offers a range of exhilarating dishes and even craft beers. The peninsula has something to offer to everyone – swimming in the wild Atlantic Ocean, walking routes for all ages abilities, a thriving Irish language community, a rich musical tradition, some of the best surfing in Ireland.
