For a shorter break the Ancient East, start in Waterford, move on to Kilkenny, Carlow, Westmeath and finish at Cavan.

You will find some beautiful Irish Hotels and a rugged coastline in the town of Ardmore, Co. Waterford. For the foodie Ardmore is the only town in the south with a unique Irish Hotel to have a Michelin award-winning restaurant, relaxing spa and view of the ocean. A short drive into Waterford City after a stay of relaxation and food you will find much available to do. Why not take a tour of the Waterford Crystal Factory, and try visiting Reginald’s Tower followed by a walk along the quay where there is an array of Irish Hotels and Guesthouses.

Located just over an hour drive away you will find the city of Kilkenny which to some is the home of Irish Hurling. A vibrant city with plenty of hotels and guesthouses to choose from. Each summer Kilkenny hosts the Cat laughs Festival – a word to the wise, book your Irish hotel or guesthouse early as they fill up! The city is also steeped in nomadic history and hosts the medieval mile with tours starting at Kilkenny Castle. Passes can be purchased at any participating hotel in Kilkenny.

After that, move on to Carlow –a thriving midland town full of Irish Hotels and guesthouses, pubs, entertainment and friendly locals!!!! You will find great music, dance and fun for all ages here! Tourism is very important to this inland town where you will find Carlow Cathedral, Carlow Museum, Carlow Courthouse and Carlow Castle.  Don’t forget Brownshill Dolmen – a must-see attraction you will find located 10 minutes from the town centre.

Did you know that Athlone is the centre of Ireland? Primarily an army town, there are lots of Irish hotels to choose from. Another interesting fact is that Ireland's oldest bar, Sean’s Bar is in Athlone and has been visited by many international celebrities and they have the pictures to prove it!   The cruise on the Shannon is a must-do on a sunny day for all the family and age groups. Cruises go every two hours and start near Sean’s bar and take about an hour.

Keen golfers won’t be disappointed with the selection of Irish Hotels and golf courses in Cavan such as Farnham Estate, Cavan Golf Club, Virginia, or Belturbet. There is a selection of Irish Hotel and Guesthouse options to be found in Cavan all supplying a great Irish Breakfast to feed the hard-working golfer. There are also beautiful views of the lakes and walks in the forests and relaxing spas. Cavan Genealogy is located not far from the town centre and can help you to trace your family roots in Cavan. There are thousands of records available all sourced by Dr Jane Lyons.
